Static stretching means lengthening a muscle into a position and holding it there. It is not inherently bad. It can improve flexibility and has a place in rehab or separate mobility work in some situations. The problem arises when long static stretches are used as the main warm-up immediately before strength, speed or explosive training. At that point they can temporarily reduce the muscle’s ability to produce force and power.
What static stretching does
The aim of a warm-up is not simply to “stretch the muscle”. It is to raise tissue temperature, improve neuromuscular activation, prepare the joints for a specific range and gradually move the body closer to the work that follows. Static stretching does something different: it reduces passive tension and increases stretch tolerance. That can help flexibility, but it is not always useful immediately before an activity that requires stiffness, a fast response and high force production.
A 2011 review by Behm and Chaouachi concludes that static stretching can impair subsequent performance, particularly in activities that depend on strength, speed and explosiveness, while a dynamic warm-up usually has a neutral or positive effect. In practice, before squats, deadlifts, sprints or heavy presses, it is not ideal to spend several minutes in deep static positions and then move straight into working sets.
A meta-analysis by Simic et al. also found that static stretching before exercise can acutely reduce maximal strength, power and explosive performance. The effect is not identical for everyone and depends on duration, intensity and the activity that follows. Even so, the practical direction is clear: if you want to lift heavily or explosively, it is not sensible to spend a long time passively stretching the main working muscles first.
What the studies show
Stretch duration is an important detail. In their meta-analysis, Kay and Blazevich report that a short static stretch of less than 30 seconds has a negligible negative effect, while longer stretching, especially around 60 seconds or more per muscle group, increases the risk of impaired performance. This does not mean you must never touch your toes before training. It means long holds at end range are not a suitable main warm-up before strength work.
A more recent review by Chaabene et al. refines the conclusion: static stretching is not automatically harmful when it is short, not overly intense and forms part of a complete warm-up followed by activation. The authors still advise caution when strength or explosive work follows. That is more useful in practice than a blanket ban. Static stretching is not always a problem; poor timing and excessive duration are.
A dynamic warm-up is a better choice before training: controlled movement through the range you will use in the session. Before squats, this might include light squats, moving hip mobility drills, lunges, progressive warm-up sets and trunk activation. Before presses, it might include shoulder circles, low-intensity press-ups, shoulder-blade work and progressive warm-up sets.
Static stretching fits better after training, away from strength sessions or in a separate mobility session. If you need it before training because your range is limited, keep it short, do not push aggressively into pain, and always follow it with active movements and warm-up sets. If performance and muscle growth are the goal, the warm-up should prepare your body to produce force, not dampen it beforehand.

The practical conclusion is that static stretching is not the enemy. It simply does not belong as a long main block immediately before heavy or explosive training. Before performance, use a dynamic warm-up and specific warm-up sets. Keep static holds for the end of training or separate flexibility work.
